9th July 2008 - Taronga Zoo & Sydney Transport

We are going to the zoo! On our way to Taronga zoo, the only zoo which keeps platypus.

Seems like there's a Central train station everywhere. There's one in Melbourne, Brisbane, Sydney and Hong Kong. This photo reminded me of a similar one we took in Hong Kong, with the same five of us.

Acting cute...

Sydney's train is actually double-decked and the direction of the seats can be changed by adjusting the back rest. Why is it that trains in foreign countries are always more interesting?

Ferry terminal. We had to take a ferry to Taronga zoo.

On the ferry

The ferry was crowded but we still managed to take lots of photos in there.

One good thing about not taking out your own camera is that people will be taking lots of shots of you. Haha...

Our first glimpse of Sydney Opera House...

Damn... I looked really tired...

I'm glad I was not the only one who looked tired. :b

We finally reached Taronga zoo after a very crowded ferry and bus ride. There's a choice of taking either bus or cable car to the zoo from the ferry terminal. We chose to go there by bus and back by cable car.

There are lots of postcards and posters with kangaroos striking such pose. All along, I've always thought that photoshop was used to create such a pose. Until that day, I finally realised that kangaroos are capable of striking such a pose. So funny...

Platypus... The creature that drew us to Taronga zoo, the animal which was blamed for Sindy's injury.

Sindy fell and hurt her knees quite badly while in Taronga zoo. We weren't there when it happened because, like a little kid, she ran ahead when she knew that we were getting close to the Platypus area. Alan was the first to reach her and saw her bleeding. Initially, we thought it was a small injury as she only held her scrapped palms out to us. Then, we looked down at her knees and went berserk. Her jeans were torn and the cut on her knees were really deep. I almost fainted.

We managed to locate the first aid office with the help of a Caucasian lady.

Throughout the rest of the trip, Alan was Sindy's main helper. He even offered to piggy-back her! It's really tough on him, being the only guy on the trip. I guess we better ask some guys along too for future trips so that he wouldn't feel so stressed. Haha...

The first aid helper who cleaned and bandaged Sindy's wounds.

All cleaned up and ready to continue!

I can't really remember but I think this blond kid came up to Cerina when we were taking her photo. So cute...

This fake leopard was perched on top of a tree branch that was hanging over a part of the pedestrian walk. I almost freaked when I first saw it as I thought it was real. A closer look revealed that it was fake.

Reminded us of 射雕英雄传 and 神雕侠侣.

Have I ever told you that elephant is my favourite animal, besides dog?

Just got out of the reptiles cave

The lions in Taronga zoo were really cute, they stayed near the observation area so we could all take photos to our hearts content. The lions in Singapore zoo tend to hide in their caves so we couldn't take such a close-up photo of them.

Meerkats... Really cute creatures. This one ran to us when we snapped our fingers at them. Some tourists even managed to pet them. Me, I'm too much of a scaredy cat to anyhow touch animals without permission.

They really love the lamp. I think maybe because it was winter and the lamp provided them with warmth.

We were really amazed by the number of mountain goats in the zoo compared to the other species of animals. So, we guessed that mountain goats must be very affordable and really easy to maintain.

There was a carved monkey making funny faces on top of the mirror and we were trying to imitate it.

That was a really funny pose by Alan. Haha...

One of the icons of Australia - the Koala bear.

We couldn't cuddle the real one so we got the fake one to cuddle us.

My first ride in a cable car

Our only group photo, taken just before our mad rush for the ferry.

Our tickets to the zoo, I think I didn't keep mind.

The yellow-and-green ferry was similar to the one we took.

Boarding the train to Blue Mountain. We were all carrying overnight bags throughout our zoo excursion.

The train was quite full and we couldn't get any seats for us. We ended up standing between carriages, and ate our dinner outside the toilets. Sounds very pitiful right? But we had fun then. After around half an hour of standing, we found seats and got to rest our poor legs.

It was freaking cold in Blue Mountain and we almost had to sleep on the streets because there was something wrong with my hostel bookings. Apparently, the backpacker hostel that I booked was not open during winter and the management thought my booking was for September! The backpacker hostel was locked up when we arrived. The best thing was, that hostel was situated just beside a funeral shop so it was pretty spooky. Sindy was totally spooked out and made us nervous too. Luckily, we managed to get beds at a nearby family hotel and settled down for the night.

8th July 2008 - Sydney airport & Sydney city

Sydney airport

All of us, except one, were studiously poring over the travel guides while waiting for the free shuttle bus to pick us up.

At the backpacker's hostel, waiting for the check-in procedure to be done.

After dumping our luggage at the hostel, we decided to explore around and look for a place to have dinner. Our hostel was within chinatown so it was quite convenient for us.

Starving but always game for photo taking...

Finally, we decided to have Korean food for dinner. There's a choice of sitting near the windows or further into the restaurant. Initially, we chose to sit near the windows but had to change seats after 10mins. The windows were open and we couldn't stand the strong wind. The Korean food was not very nice and quite expensive. Our first meal at both Melbourne and Sydney were quite disappointing...

8th July 2008 - Queen Victoria Market & Melbourne Airport

Our last day in Melbourne...

We had to return the car today but both Sindy and I don't feel like driving so Alan got to experience driving within Melbourne city.

The trams made driving a bit confusing within the city as one has to look out for the tram tracks too in case there are trams coming along the tracks. It was only supposed to be a 5min drive to the car rental but we managed to get lost again and took more than twice the time. Once, we actually got on the tram track while waiting for the traffic light to turn green. That was scary... We almost burst Alan's ear drums, screaming at him to get off the tracks. Haha...

After returning the car, we walked to Queen Victoria Market which is quite famous for cheap souvenirs and good food. We happily stuff ourselves with good breakfast food there. Life's good...

Doughnut bun

From this bakery

Some kind of pizza

Fish & chips. Sindy and Alan kept saying they want to have fish & chips and finally they get to enjoy it!

After a fruitful shopping at Queen Victoria Market, we decided to walk along the city and take more photos. Creative?

Outside the fitting rooms, while waiting for Sindy to try something.

We passed by Southern Cross train station on the way to Direct Factory Outlet (DFO).

Outside DFO... Quite disappointed by the DFO here but I guess it's mostly due to the fact that we don't really like branded stuff.

Hungry Jack's, the Aussie version of Burger King.

The stairs photo again, this time on moving stairs instead (escalator).

Finally, time to 'fly' to Sydney! This is still Melbourne airport though. There are 2 domestic airports in Melbourne. One is within the main Melbourne airport, which is around 20mins drive from the city, and the other is known as the Avalon airport which is freaking far from the city.

I was changing my boots to sneakers instead. That's because boots then to set off the alarm when walking through the metal detector thing. Then, I would have to take off my boots and walk through it bare-footed so I would rather change first.

The domestic plane we took was something similar to this one.

View from the plane. Next stop - Sydney!
