Korea - 20th May 2011

We took this airport transfer bus to the Jeju airport. Bus ticket costed 5,000won (~SGD6) each. The bus took longer than expected and we reached Jeju airport later than we predicted. We hastily collected our overnight bags from the bus' baggage compactment and ran all the way to the check-in counter. Luckily, we were still in time for our flight.

Our brunch at Lotteria Fastfood restaurant back in Seoul airport.

We had to clear our own rubbish and there was a specific bin for everything. One is for general trash, one for plastic and one for food waste. There's even a sink for pouring away leftover drinks. Interesting... Compared to other countries, Singapore's recycling effort is really quite backward in this sense.

After re-checking in at Hotel Sunbee, we decided to go for some kimchi making lessons.

We found this kimchi place from an introductory brochure at the tourist information counter near our hotel.

The products sold at the Kimchi World.

The ingredients required for kimchi making. The sauce was already prepared for us.

Our instructor helped us to take a photo before starting. The girl in the photo is from Thailand and she was touring Korea alone. So brave!

We had to coat the sauce on every leaf of the pre-marinated lettuce.

Done! The instructor had to check and make sure it's evenly coated before he 'passed' us.

When the instructor was satisfied with our work, we stuffed the whole lettuce into this plastic container to bring home. I had heard from friends that they were not allowed to bring their kimchi back with them so I was pleasantly surprised to hear that we can bring our kimchi back.

The man in the background was our instructor, James.

James wrote our names in Korean beside our English name and signed off on the lid.

Posing with our kimchi

Next, we get to cook Tteokbokki which is also known as Korean rice cakes. I like!

Looks yummy~~~

Precious photo... Not many people had seen me cook, you know? Just a short while of cooking and I'm already 披头散发. Haha...

Done! It was delicious! And just nice, I was hungry. According to James, 6 sticks of the rice cake is equivalent to 1 bowl of rice. He was quite surprised when he saw me eating a lot of the rice cake.

They also prepared this pomegranate drink for us to drink while eating the rice cakes.

Actually, they meant for us to drink this rice beer while eating the rice cakes but since we do not like to drink alcohol, they let us bring it home instead.

The whole lesson costed 25,000won (~SGD29) for each person which I think was quite reasonable.

As the kimchi was quite heavy, we walked back to our hotel to deposit the food before going out for shopping.

We went to Namdaemum (南大门) Market for some shopping. There had been rumours that the place was burnt down quite some time ago. Well, it was partly true as the gate itself was burnt down but the market was untouched.

We did not buy much as a lot of the shops were not open. Also, the place was considerably deserted compared to Dongdaemun and Myeong-dong. We only spent quite a short time there and decided to shop at Myeong-dong instead.

There's a dog cafe in Myeong-dong. Ivy and YL took photos with its mascot.

We went to a porride shop to have our dinner. The porridge was quite good but expensive and the portion quite little. One bowl costed average 8,000won (~SGD9). The black colour side dish is some kind of seasoned seaweed and it was really good.

After some more shopping, we went back to our hotel to rest and prepare for the next day's outing.

Korea - 19th May 2011 Part 3

We finally managed to reach the Teddy Bear Museum before it closed for the day. I think our timing was quite good as there wasn't a lot of people around so the displays were not crowded. The admission ticket costed 7,000won (~SGD8) each.

The Mona Lisa

Michelangelo - The Creation of Adam

The LV bear

The most expensive bear in the museum. Its nose is made of real gold!

The Korean traditional wedding ceremony

Teddy bears from the Korean drama - 宫.

It's a bird! No, it's a plane! No, it's Superman!!!

The earlier bears

Elvis!

Marilyn Monroe!

They even have 兵马俑!

The Thinker

Life size teddy bear... So cute!

Then we went outside of the museum and had fun taking photos with the bear statues.

Taking each other's photos...

The photo that Ivy took.

Posing for the bear photographer...

YL's turn!

Crashing other people, I mean other bear's party. Haha...

After taking lots of photos in the Teddy Bear Museum, it was almost closing time and we left in search of dinner. Across the road is this Ripley's Believe It or Not! Museum. There's a cafe in it but it was closed when we reached.

We walked around a bit and consulted the tourist map along the road and finally discovered a Korean restaurant. The famous Lotte Hotel was actually very near the Teddy Bear Museum but eating dinner there would have burst our budget for the entire trip!

After dinner, we took a cab (costed 12,200won ~ SGD14) back to our hostel.

Before retiring for the night, we went to the roof-top of our hostel to see the view.

When we were at the roof-top, there was a group of Caucasians chatting and drinking beer at a table. I noticed a few of them kept staring at us, maybe wanting to talk to us or something. However, we were too tired to socialise so we pretended not to notice.

After a while at the roof-top, we went back to our room to pack up and crash. We had an early flight to catch the next morning.

Our room consisted of a single bed and a super single bed. Another reason why I didn't really like this hostel is that the drain in bath tub was not flowing smoothly. We had to wait a while for all the water to drain before the next one can go in to shower.

We did not feedback to the receptionist because I don't want to talk to the fatty anymore! Next time, I'm trying the guesthouse further down the road...

Korea - 19th May 2011 Day 4 Part 2

As mentioned in the previous entry, we took a bus to Seogwipo city and from there, took a cab to our backpacker hostel called Jeju Hiking Inn. The cab costed us 22,500won (around SGD26)It would have been much much cheaper if we did not get lost.

After checking into the hostel, we dumped our bags in our room and proceeded to our next stop.

Me, asking the unfriendly fatty at the reception for directions. Maybe it's because I woke him up from his nap. Or maybe it's because I'm not Caucasian. Anyway, the receptionist was really unfriendly and impatient. That came as a shock as before we went to Korea, we read raving reviews about the hostel and how friendly the receptionist is. I wouldn't go back to stay even if they offered a room to me free of charge!

Our next stop is the Cheonjiyeon Waterfall. It's within walking distance from our hostel.

Reached the tourist area where there's restaurants and such... We bought admission tickets here at 2,000won (SGD2.30) each.

Lunch! I ordered bibimbab (not really nice)...

While one of them had noodles. Can't remember what the third one had. Our meal costed 18,000won (SGD21).

We walked along this path to reach the waterfall.

Reached!

There were lots of other tourists around and really difficult to get a good picture.

But we managed... Haha...

I have to say that the waterfall is quite average, nothing spectacular and a bit too 'touristy'. I heard another waterfall, The Jeongbang Waterfall is the only waterfall in Asia that falls direct into the ocean. I want to go there next time!

Reminded me of Taroko in Taiwan.

We saw men in the water trying to clean up the place by removing all the seaweed thingy.

On cab to the next attraction. Costed 19,000won (SGD22).

Ta Da~~~ The Miniature Theme Park! Ivy and I were really excited as we've never been to one before.

So many world famous attractions behind me! And I looked so haggard... Damn...

Haha!

Dum dum, give me some gum gum! Sounds familiar? Haha...

OMG! Giant yakult!!!

Ok, it's a vending machine but it's cute! Haha...

This is not very mini. Hopefully, I'll get to see the real one real soon!

Please remind me that I want to visit Mount Rushmore, South Dakota when I go U.S.

Me with Napoleon (YL).

And YL with a Korean Imperial Guard (Ivy).

Aladdin (YL) and Jasmine (Ivy)!

Me and my seven Dwarfs. Haha...

One of my childhood idol... Donatello!

So sweet!

So cute!

YL sharing her book with smurf. Funny lah... Haha...

Saying goodbye to the mini Statue of Liberty before we proceed to our next destination.

We wanted to take a cab to our next stop. At the carpark of the theme park, we saw a black cab waiting there and unanimously decided not to take that cab. For reason, please refer to day 1's entry. Haha...

We decided to walk to the main road to try our luck. The main road was quite deserted and we felt like we were in the middle of nowhere. We didn't want to go back to the theme park as we had practically risked our lives crossing the road over and we did not want to risk it again.

We waited for quite a long while and realised that there's not many cars in sight, much less cabs. A cab finally pulled up when we were about to call JK and ask him to help us call for a cab. Lucky for us since we were about to panic as the sky looked threatening and it was getting late. And the people there can't speak English... What a day of adventure!
